Designer Tip: Lower or remove the top shelf on each book case and hang a framed print on the back of the book case... to fill in the back wall of the top shelves. Then place one or two small decorative objects on each shelf. Or remove one middle shelf (this is more ideal for narrow book cases) and display a tall object... like a vase... flower arrangement... scultpure.
When purchasing these types of shelves, you should ensure that they come with a protective coating such as chrome that will ensure the shelves resist rust and last a lifetime. The shelves with a protective coating will also look good for very long. The shelves can save you money in the long run because unlike wooden shelves, you do not have to recoat, repaint or replace them. You should therefore not worry about their initial prices, even though they may cost more than other shelves.
It is highly unlikely that you will have to acquire a building permit for this type of project, unless you decide to do any kind of plumbing or electrical wiring. When in doubt, be sure to check your city's building codes.
